Technology you can use
Is an iPad for you?
30/05/10 14:58
The iPad is out and has sold over 1 million units. It is a wonderful piece of technology with great promise. If you are looking to surf the net, listen to music, check your email, etc. the iPad might be just the item for you. If you are more of a road warrior you might want to wait until it multi-tasks and HTML5 is fully implemented.
Scareware

Ever hear of scareware? Most of us have not but have been a recipient of this scam. You receive a pop-up or even on a regular web page and there is that ominous message “You are Infected, scan your computer now.” These programs will easily “scan” my, MacIntosh, my Ubuntu, and Windows not. They are not scanners and they will always “find” that you are “infected” and for just $29.95 you can download their software and clean your disk. Don’t do it unless you like to pay to be screwed. There is no cleaning your system, just some nasty software to use your machine as a bot or steal your information.
Well, what should you use? I use AVG for my anti-virus, and scan with Malwarebytes to detect malware. There are many other very good free versions of of software prophylactic on the market.

Lock Down you Wireless Network
14/10/09 08:18
Wireless is a great way to setup your network. However, with a “sniffer” it is not difficult to break into a wireless network. Some folks just want to steal some electrons, check their email and leave doing no damage. However, there are a few who think it is “fun” to destroy what others have built. We must stop those nefarious types!
First thing is to read your wireless router manual.
Here is your check-list for your router, aka Access Point (AP).
ON YOUR ROUTER
Set admin and user passwords
Turn off the AP SSID
Turn off AP DHCP
Enable MAC addresses verification
Lower the broadcast power to just what is necessary for your situation
Use directional antenna if possible
Turn the AP off when vacationing
ON YOUR COMPUTER
Set to connect without a SSID broadcast
Set up a static IP address, DNS Server, and Default Gateway
